finished elite squad of stormtroopers

I got distracted by a sale at GOG.com (good old games) so I got back to continuing painting today. I've now done the three elite troopers (I'm calling them 'shock troopers' like the elite soldiers in the new Star Wars Battlefront game).

(Of course, they're only an inch tall in real life, so if you click to view larger image, just remember the paint work looks better at life size scale.)

painting the imperial assault elite stormtrooper - shock trooper

So I decided since the elite figures have red cards, I would introduce red into various elite unit figures. I was watching a trailer for the upcoming star wars battlefront game, and saw the shock troopers. They are basically elite stormtroopers, with similar red paint markings to prequel era clone shock troopers. So I found some pics on the net like this one:


and decided to try painting some figures up in that sort of style for the elite stormtroopers and elite heavy stormtroopers.

I undercoated in white, then step one was to paint in white and red

step two was to wash with black

step three was to repaint white and red, and to use a slightly brighter red for tops of boots, tops of shoulder pads, and top of head. I also ended up brushing black paint onto the gun, and a bit of metallic paint along the top of the gun. I wasn't quite sure what to do with the red on the face, so I decided to leave the main nose bit, and the eyes, in white, and surrounded it with the red.

I like how it turned out. I'm not going for display quality here, just a good tabletop playing piece quality, so I'm happy with how it looks. One figure down, now to do the other two elite stormtroopers, and then the two elite heavy troopers. Then painting the black and white regular troopers should be a bit quicker and easier.

Imperial Assault Probe Droids

These ARE the droids I was looking for...

Today I painted the three Probe Droids. I decided that the 'elite' one would have a reddish metal to set it apart, and glowing red lenses on the head. Here's how they turned out. I tried to keep the photo dark so that they looked more like real life - I did multiple dry brushes of colour (red or metal), each followed by a black wash, to get dark, muted tones. I've decided to paint the bases flat black for now on all the figures, since they aren't 3D terrain based wargaming figures, but are used on a board game with many terrain types. Here's the Imperial Forces so far:

At the back are Allies who can be deployed to aid the player's Heroes. Allies are people like Han or Luke, or a squad of rebel troopers, etc.  At the front are the Player Heroes so far.

These are the neutrals, which are things like sand people or bounty hunters like Boba Fett.

Hard to see on a red bed spread, but this is a huge bunch of map tiles which are used to piece together the levels of the game. The tiles are double sided, with different terrain on both sides, allowing anything from the bridge of a star destroyer to a desert cantina, to the forest moon of Endor!

Imperial Assault - Even Bad Guys have Class

So, it's not just the rebel player who gets to pick what sort of hero they will be. The Imperial player gets to pick what kind of Imperial Leader they are. For the first campaign play through, learning how to play the campaign, I have picked "Technological Superiority".

My Imperial is a Tech Expert!

Depending on what kind of Imperial Leader is chosen, different types of things will be happening during the campaign, adding a whole new flavour to the battles in each mission, and just like the Rebel player gains powers and abilities as they progress, the Imperial player gains new abilities as well!

It's all these amazing game-changing choices and changes that are littered throughout the game that make Imperial Assault such a fun game, such a varied game, and make it so that there are so many different ways in which a campaign could play out each time you play through the game.

Minor Spoiler about an ability the Imperial player might get to use in the game. If you are a rebel player, and want to be surprised by some of the things that the Imperials might get to do in the game, then don't read further.

It's amazing how these Imperial Classes add a whole flavour to the campaign, because one of the first things I have unlocked as a Tech Guy is Jetpacks. None of the other Imperial classes get this, just the Tech Guy.

Jetpacks mean that all troopers from now on - whether just stormtroopers, or heavy troopers, or whatever, now have Jetpacks for the whole campaign, granting them the Mobility ability! Suddenly they can sail over other figures without paying extra movement costs, or leap up on top of a blocking object to shoot down on their foes, and skip over the top of impassable features, and all sorts of cool stuff like that.

In this campaign, the rebels face an army of jet troopers! How cool is that? Who knows what they might face in a different campaign? We'll have to wait and see!

Imperial Assault box set has arrived!

I've still got expansion figures/maps/cards coming in the mail, but the core box set has arrived! It's HUGE! Look at the photo - the assembled AT-ST is SHORTER than the game's box!

There's so much cool stuff in here, and the map tiles are really high quality, and have different images on each side. Anyway, I'll be a while browsing through everything, painting stuff up, and learning to play the campaign and skirmish modes, but for now, here's a photo with stuff unpacked :)

NEWS: Return of Pauls Star Wars Miniatures with Star Wars Imperial Assault

A new look for the blog, and a new game to play!

Here's a head's up!

I have splurged on a whole bunch of the recent Star Wars miniatures game: Imperial Assault.

Once things start arriving in the mail, I'll be getting back into painting, tutorialing, playing and campaigning, so look out for a whole new slew of posts and photos in the near future as I paint, play, and more!

I may even try 3d-ing some scenery to go with the map tiles. Who knows!
